6 Must-Visit Waterfalls in the Yorkshire Dales

6 Must-Visit Waterfalls in the Yorkshire Dales My Urban Trail

The Yorkshire Dales is incredibly underrated and home to some of the most stunning waterfalls in the UK. Whether you're looking for a waterfall walk or a place to wild swim, these six waterfalls provide the perfect opportunity to explore nature's power. We've rounded up our favourites with a link to a downloadable walk via AllTrails for each one so you can easily find your way to these breathtaking waterfalls.

1. Posforth Gill, Valley of Desolation

Posforth Gill is a waterfall located in the Valley of Desolation in the Yorkshire Dales. The valley got its name from a devastating storm in 1826 that destroyed the area. The falls flow through a wooded area, slightly hidden off the path. It’s a peaceful spot, offering a quiet walk through a striking part of the Dales to the waterfall.

For a great 8km walk that visits the Valley of Desolation, the waterfall of Posforth Gill and a dangerous stretch of river called The Strid, check out our previous blog here.

Or, if you want a longer walk that ties in the Valley of Desolation as well as a walk to the summit of Simon’s Seat, check out this walk on AllTrails.

2. Kisdon Force, Keld

Kisdon Force is located just outside the village of Keld in the Yorkshire Dales. The falls cascade down the River Swale creating a beautiful sight as the water tumbles over rocks into a deep pool. The area is particularly scenic, with the surrounding landscape of high cliffs, rolling hills and traditional farmland adding to its charm.

Check out this 10km circular walk from Muker on AllTrails that takes you to Kisdon Force as well as some other waterfalls in the area. The route is relatively easy although there is a steep downhill section to get to the Kisdon Force. It is very important to take care here especially in wet weather when the ground is muddy and slippy.

3. Force Gill, Whernside

Force Gill runs down from the slopes of Whernside, one of the official Three Peaks in the Yorkshire Dales. As the water flows down the hillside, it creates a series of smaller falls and pools, making it a scenic spot. You can see the 15m high waterfall from the main path up Whernside and getting to it is straightforward. The easiest and quickest way is to park in the free parking on Blea Moor Road, follow the path alongside the viaduct and follow the train line. The path is well maintained and after about 20 minutes, as the path starts to ascend Whernside, you’ll see the waterfall in the distance.

Or, you can check out this 13km circular loop on AllTrails that starts at Ribblehead Viaduct and summits Whernside with a stop at the waterfall on the way.

4. Aysgarth Falls, Wensleydale

Aysgarth Falls is a series of waterfalls located on the River Ure in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. The falls are made up of three main stages, where the river flows over limestone steps, creating a dramatic display of water as it makes its way through the valley to the next set of falls. The area is well-known for its natural beauty and has been a popular spot for visitors for centuries.

The walk to Aysgarth Falls is relatively easy and accessible, with a well-maintained path from the visitor centre car park that takes you along the river and through the surrounding woodland. The falls are especially impressive after heavy rainfall, when the water levels are high, but even in drier months, the sight of the falls is beautiful. It’s a peaceful place perfect for a leisurely stroll or a picnic by the river. The Aysgarth Falls Waterfall Trail is a 3km loop that can be found on AllTrails here.

5. Cauldron Falls, West Burton

Cauldron Falls is a waterfall located in the village of West Burton in the Yorkshire Dales. The water tumbles down a series of rocky steps in the River Ure, creating a natural cauldron where the water swirls before continuing its flow. The area around the falls is surrounded by woodlands and you can even walk behind the waterfall at this one!

The walk to Cauldron Falls is short but enjoyable, with a well-marked path leading from West Burton village. The walk is easy and suitable for all levels and is actually only a few minutes from the centre of the village. The best way to reach Cauldron Falls is to park in the centre of the village and follow the path alongside Walden Beck at the bottom of the village. The falls are especially charming in the spring and autumn, when the surrounding trees are in full leaf or color. For an alternative, longer walk, this 9km circular loop on AllTrails starts in West Burton and winds through the trees to Cauldron Falls. The route then follows Walden Beck and up a beautiful valley, passing through farmlands. The final stretch is along the road back.

6. Catrigg Force, Stainforth

Catrigg Force is a hidden gem in the Yorkshire Dales located near the village of Stainforth. The waterfall is formed by the waters of Cowside Beck, down a series of rocky steps into a deep, moss-covered gorge. The waterfall is surrounded by a lush, wooded area giving the spot a secluded feel.

The walk to Catrigg Force is relatively short on a good track and involves a short but steep start from the main car park in Stainforth. It’s a perfect spot for those looking for a quieter waterfall in the Yorkshire Dales and is a superb place for a wild swim. All Trails has an excellent 4km loop that starts in Stainforth, heads up to the limestone pavement of Stainforth Scar and along to Catrigg Force before descending back down to the village.
